May 28, 2026 – “Wild Strawberries”: An Old Man Looks Back
Ingmar Bergman’s early masterpiece is not your average road movie
————————————————————
In early 1957, Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman should have been riding high on the success of his light comedy, “Smiles of a Summer Night” (1955), and dark drama, “The Seventh Seal” (1957).
Yet his personal life was a mess, his third marriage in trouble due to his extended affair with Bibi Andersson, a member of his stock company who’d first appeared in “Smiles”.
The accumulated stress in Bergman’s life led to severe gastric issues, requiring a hospital stay where he started writing one of his most beloved works: “Wild Strawberries” (1957).
