Pollyanna

What it’s about

On the death of her missionary parents in the early 1900’s, the spirited young Pollyanna (Mills) goes to live with her wealthy but stern Aunt Polly (Wyman), who controls the local town and is rigid in both her religious views and sense of responsibility. Pollyanna’s innate optimism and openness toward everyone she meets gradually brings about a change in the community and, eventually, in her Aunt Polly.

Why we love it

This colorful, delightful Disney fare boasts a first-rate cast, including veterans Wyman (who's excellent), Karl Malden, Agnes Moorehead, Donald Crisp, and Adolphe Menjou, but young Mills (in her first stateside Disney appearance) steals it from all of them, carrying the movie with her natural, guileless performance. Gorgeously shot, with wonderful turn of the century detail, this is a winner from start to finish.
