What it’s about

Dublin-based Flora (Hewson) isn’t leading her best life: Oren (Kinlan), the son she gave birth to at 17, is now a surly, uncommunicative 14, and her doltish ex-husband Ian (Reynor) is no help. One day she retrieves a broken guitar, repairs it and gives it to Oren, who shows no interest. She decides to use it herself, signing up for online instruction with Jeff (Gordon-Levitt). Rediscovering the healing power of music, Flora may even find a way to re-connect with her son.

Why we love it

A story that could have been gooey resonates, thanks to writer/director Carney’s affinity for relatable characters who appreciate (or come to appreciate) the magic of music. Credit goes to Hewson, who makes us root for the flawed Flora. Her scenes with the appealing Gordon-Levitt are a highlight. (See if you’re not moved when Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” comes up!) “Flora and Son” will leave music lovers with a nice high, without too much sugar.
