What It’s About

Convict Butch Haynes escapes from a Texas prison, and ends up on the road with ten-year-old Phillip Perry (Lowther) as his hostage. Seasoned Texas Ranger Red Garnett (Eastwood), who we learn had a hand in sending Butch away, is hot on his trail, along with criminologist Sally Gerber (Dern). Butch sees something of himself in the fatherless Phillip, and treats him kindly. But there’s little chance these two can keep their road trip going indefinitely, with the authorities closing in.

Why We Love It

Why Eastwood’s unsung, understated winner didn’t receive more acclaim remains a mystery. Playing against type, Costner turns in one of his more layered performances as Butch, who’d never have become a criminal if life’s cards hadn’t been stacked against him from the start. Eastwood brings a wry humor to Red, a lawman who’s seen it all, and it’s fun watching him spar with brainy upstart Dern as the chase continues. Featuring a breathless finish that leaves a tear in the eye, “A Perfect World” constitutes perfect viewing for a rainy day.
