Celine and Julie Go Boating

Released 1974
Runtime 193
Language French
Director Jacques Rivette

What It’s About

A study in opposites, bohemian magician Celine (Berto) and librarian Julie meet by chance in Paris. It seems opposites really do attract, as these two misfits bond by eating magic candy and entering a time-bending fantasy world, where characters from another age play out a drama in an old house just outside the city. Celine and Julie actually get to participate, trying out different roles. Will they ever find time to go boating?

Why We Love It

A trippy, surreal cinematic experience, you’ll either find yourself diving down the rabbit hole with the two kooky, charismatic stars or alternatively, feeling frustrated by its impenetrability and seeming self-indulgence. This dizzying film seems haphazard and improvisational, but in fact each scene involved painstaking preparation from cast and crew. The best approach is to abandon any idea of linear logic and surrender to the make-believe and charm of the whole enterprise. Ardent fans of Paris and in particular, the refreshing anarchy the French New Wave will be transported by “Celine and Julie”, often cited as a masterpiece, and with good reason.
