What's it About

Sakamoto was a brilliant pianist, composer and environmental advocate, both here and in his native Japan. As a film composer, he won an Oscar in 1988 for “The Last Emperor”, and more recently a BAFTA nomination for “The Revenant” (2017). In “Coda,” having gone into remission from the cancer that would finally claim him in 2023, the gentle, white-maned artist reveals what sustains him: a continual quest to discover distinctive, unexpected sounds for his music in nature or daily life.

Why we love it

If you’re unfamiliar with the life and work of Ryuichi Sakamoto, director Schible’s absorbing “Coda” will remedy that. At a time when most films are only getting louder and faster, this intimate portrait maintains a serene, contemplative pace in keeping with its subject. We follow Sakamoto on several trips, including a sobering visit to the Fukushima nuclear plant, and a wondrous journey to the Arctic Circle where he records the sound of water created from melting ice. In general, the best moments happen when we’re simply observing Sakamoto making music or exploring sound. The sheer joy on his face when he hears something new and different is worth the price of admission. Don’t miss “Coda,” a fitting tribute to a great artist.
