After her grandmother passes away, eight-year-old Nelly (Josephine Sanz) stays in her country house, where her own grieving mom Marion (Meurisse) grew up. The bright, precocious child is processing death for the first time, but finds comfort playing with a new friend (Gabrielle Sanz) she encounters while walking in the woods. Curiously there’s a strong resemblance between the two girls. What’s going on here?
This modest, disarming fantasy (made during the Co-vid epidemic) deftly explores an impossible scenario: what would it be like to know your own parents as peers? Director Sciamma brings a light touch to her fable, not bothering to explain how this particular magic comes about. Among the stellar cast, twin sisters Josephine and Gabrielle Sanz elevate the film with utterly natural performances. Don’t miss the gently bewitching “Petite Maman.”
