Start a Movie Club
Starting a Movie Club:Introduction …is not as difficult as it may sound. We know, because we’ve held them on and off in our own home for close to ten years. They are in fact both fun and rewarding; you and your guests will love them. Interactive Movie Clubs An alternative to a set series is to make the film series truly interactive. Let each of your members choose two films from bestmoviesbyfarr.com, your assurance of quality control. (Click here to learn more about the underlying philosophy and criteria for selecting BMBF titles) Then, let the rest of the group look up the movies and vote on which to see. It’s very democratic! Choreographing the Evening We recommend serving dinner after the film, hors d’ouevres and a drink before the screening, but this can be reversed according to your preference. (We think it’s better not to view a movie on a full stomach, unless either the food-or the movie- is particularly light. digesting food takes up brain cells.) Another fun option for the evening is asking a trivia question before the screening relating to some aspect of the film and then giving away a related DVD to whoever answers correctly at the end. Finding juicy movie trivia is easy via Internet Movie Database, and buying a DVD on Amazon Marketplace (even used) is surprisingly reasonable for most movies- usually less than a single movie ticket! Sharing the Load of Entertaining You should enjoy your movie club evenings as much as your guests. The person who selects or “sponsors” the film should take on the extra task of bringing the main course, and assigning members the task of dessert, hors d’oeuvres, wine, etc. At our own movie club, unless it’s our turn to pick a film, we provide only liquid refreshment. This seems only fair since we’re hosting. If your club has multiple hosts/venues for screenings, the same rule applies. And finally, if you opt to pursue a set series of films, the rotation of food and drink responsibilities still works and is recommended.. Prompts for Post-Movie Discussion If you need to get the post-movie discussion cranked up a bit, here are some good prompts that usually spark interaction. The trick here is not to make the discussion feel too formal or academic. First and foremost, this is all supposed to be fun. What was the intended message of the film, and was that message effectively delivered? Do you agree with/ relate to that message? How did the movie make you feel overall? Were there any shaky plot points or other elements that detracted? If you’d seen it before, was it as you remembered? Had you actually heard of the film, and was it what you expected? Who was your favorite character? Least favorite? Who gave the best performance? Would you recommend or show it to other friends? What did you think of the shooting style/cinematography?
